<h2>Meet Nate Ostdiek. A graduate student running to continue the fight for a better Nebraska.</h2>Born and raised in Omaha, Nate Ostdiek has spent the majority of his life right here in District 6. A proud product of our local schools, he attended Christ the King, Swanson Elementary, and Westside High School. Following graduation, Nate chose to build his future in Omaha, confident in the opportunities this city provides. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) and is currently furthering his expertise as a graduate student in the History and Government Master's Program, while working as a Graduate Assistant for the Political Science Department.Even at a young age, Nate moves beyond the academic study of policy to put it into practice. He has a proven track record of fostering community partnerships that deliver real results. Notably, Nate negotiated a partnership between Heartland Bike Share and UNO to provide affordable transportation access. Through his efforts, the price of an annual bike share pass was reduced from $156 to just $5 for all students, faculty, and staff, without raising student fees. He understands how important access is and just how debilitating cost or bureaucracy can be.Beyond the university, Nate has been a tireless advocate for his neighbors. He has worked with organizations such as Conservation Nebraska, Planned Parenthood, and the National Strategic Research Institute to have an impact here in our community. Meanwhile, he has also organized work collecting signatures to <a href="https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/news/news-articles/voters-to-decide-fate-of-state-funded-private-school-scholarship-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">protect public schools</a>, <a href="https://www.aclunebraska.org/press-releases/207000-signatures-submitted-protect-abortion-rights-nebraska/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">secure abortion access</a>, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/11/05/us/elections/results-nebraska-initiative-437-legalize-medical-marijuana.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">legalize medical cannabis,</a> and <a href="https://dol.nebraska.gov/PressRelease/Details/338" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">increase the minimum wage</a>. The work in these areas is still not done. Nate recognizes that unless our elected officials are put under pressure, the government will continue to drag its feet and not serve the people.Now, Nate is ready to serve his neighbors in District 6 and any Nebraskan who feels left behind. Whether you want to "talk shop," pitch a policy idea, or fundamentally disagree with his platform, Nate is here to listen, learn, and adapt. The median age of a Nebraskan is 37.We are the 5th youngest state by population; we need the next generation's interests represented if we want to move forward.I'm here to set a new precedent.In Nebraska, people are ready for change. We need senators willing to bring legislation that will materially benefit Nebraskans, stand up to corrupt influences, and give the people transparency.

9/10 children in Nebraska attend a public school. Ensuring they are defending is the cornerstone of our future. Too many educators are stuck wearing multiple hats. Instead of massive giveaways for the ultrawealthy, we should be incentivizing an end to the teacher shortage, which will help ensure that ALL Nebraska children can access the educational resources they need.

Consitutional rights to free speech, voting, due process, and more have been under assault by authoritarian governance. I vow to defend your rights in the legislature and trample on no one's individuality. Free speech is a cornerstone of our country and must be fought for.

Defend Constitutional Rights

Water in many towns has become nearly undrinkable as pollution from livestock runoff has collided with contaminated groundwater. Proper management of our natural resources will be necessary to pass on a bountiful life for the people who come after us. I will support the realistic water consumption standards set by NRD and seek greater protection for water and air sustainability.

Current policy has stacked property taxes against ordinary people in favor large agribussinesses. While valuations have risen, ordinary Nebraskans are struggling to afford to stay in their homes. I will fight to correct this so that YOU can afford to live the Good Life. Nebraska spends millions on property tax relief, lets make sure that ordinary people see it instead of just the well connected.

Volunteers will write postcards, make phone calls, and explore other ways to get involved with the campaign.This is an informal event, so come as you are! Folks can stay the whole time or come to pick up/drop off postcard writing materials.Although parking is available, we encourage people to use public transportation, such as ORBT and Bike Share.

Rising expenses are the number one issue facing Nebraskans. Rent, property taxes, and groceries are too expensive. The legislature needs to make this its #1 priority. Banning price gouging, building more affordable housing, and cracking down on Wall Street firms buying up Nebraska homes should just be the start.

An Affordable Nebraska

Large electricity consumers, such as data centers, have driven up electricity bills, leaving Nebraskan families facing thousands of dollars in increases over the next decade. I will fight to freeze residential rates, ensure data centers are regulated, pay their fair share, and put Nebraska families first. Nebraska has some of the most affordable energy in the country. Let's keep it that way.

Freeze Electrcity Rates

As a young person, nearly all of my friends are either considering leaving the state or have left. By serving as a voice for young people in the legislature, I will do everything in my power to not only keep younger people but also attract them. Looking at "Brain Gain" incentives is a promising way to help Nebraska reach its fullest potential.

Combat Brain Drain

Additional resources to construct housing, fund rehabilitation, and combat addiction are necessary to make sure every Nebraskan has a place to stay, and our streets are safe and beautiful. Nobody in this state should be without a home they can afford. Housing should be more than just a commodity; it should be a right so everyone can have some stability.

End Homelessness

I commit wholeheartedly to listening to my district and what concerns them. No matter what, if you want to have a conversation, lets talk. I will do everything I can to be your champion in the legislature and advance bills that will benefit my constituents and their families. Constituent hours and casework will be a corepart of my office.

Listening to the People

It's high time we reconnected our state by rail. From Omaha to Lincoln, and to the panhandle, high speed rail is an opportunity set Nebraska as a leader. Not to mention, with high-speed rail in, game day would change forever. The first step is clearing bureaucratic hurdles like updating the state rail plan to access federal transportation funds. From there, planning and projects become possible.

High-Speed Passenger Rail

People deserve not to have their personal medical decisions, like abortion, interfered with by the government. It is a simple concept, yet one that must be upheld. Your health is your decision, and people should be empowered to make decisions about their own bodies as a matter of principle.

Join local Democratic candidates Nate Ostdiek, Whitney Hansen, Josh Livingston, and Flint Harkness to make valentines for Minnesota students. Postcard supplies courtesy of Strongly Worded Omaha will be available to write letters to your representatives.

Omaha has among the most expensive childcare in the country. All Nebraska families deserve access to daycare, and by utilizing existing public infrastructure, we can ensure support for the young professionals and working families who make up our state's backbone. The best way to have families stay in Nebraska is to make it affordable.

No Cost Childcare

I believe that immigrants are an essential component of our communities and wholeheartedly oppose their civil, legal, and labor rights being violated by the state of Nebraska, Big Agriculture, and ICE. An ICE camp has no place in Nebraska. As long as the McCook ICE Center remains open, I will commit to monthly inspections of the facility.

Protect the Rights of All People

Whether it's ignoring the will of voters, crony contracting, or corporations taking unfair advantage of tax credits programs, we need stronger, more transparent processes to keep the Executive Branch in check and campaign finance reform to ensure our elections are representative of the people.
